Student Loan Debt Poster
I volunteered to design a poster for Alan Collinge and Student Loan Justice on the student loan debt crisis.
The poster was designed using Illustrator with a minimal design style. I brainstormed an overall idea for the tagline and eventually came up with “Go To College They Said… Take Out Loans They Said…” since the debt crisis gets a lot of negative responses aimed toward and blaming borrowers instead of understanding and looking at the debt crisis. Millennials and others have been told from a young age on what you needed to do in order to get a good education and thus, a better future outcome but instead, a predatory, unfair and deceiving crisis was evolving. According to the Student Debt Crisis Center, 2021 has nearly two trillion of debt and rising. I made the stacked type resemble an American flag and included the hashtag #CancelStudentLoans to raise more awareness with a summed up hashtag in all capital type for a louder impact. I included the logo and link to the petition at the bottom to help spread the word.
Each border icon depicts money, America, or college by including illustrated coins, stars, and tassels. The long, red stripes resemble a glimpse of the American flag as Americans in general. The pig includes a bandit mask and hat to mean a piggy bank filled with money and while dressed as a robber, meaning the predatory student loan system. It is hiding while standing on top of golden bars that are the highest money value. The robber is hiding behind a large, predatory loan amount in an unfair, broken system for its borrowers.
